The Waitress

The mattress held firm amidst the cigarette burns
Procured from when she fell asleep with the red between her lips
Almost burned down the tenement! (but didn't)
She thought of her parents, what her mother would say
Her father, since it was Sunday, would exclaim outright
"He touched the base before the ball, he isn't out..right?"
The mirror reminded the waitress she was perhaps growing too thin
Slipping beneath a half apron that hung on her frame like diner decoration
The men that look at her like she's something on the menu leave good tips
Conflicting yet smiling for twenty percent, maybe twenty five
If she convinces them they may one day leave their wives
Away! Away is a grasping concept against stiffening limbs
But rigamortus set in, as if she wasn't already paralyzed before
Refilling drinks, napkins and kitchen sinks, wondering what she thinks

Find peace of mind by tearing my mind to pieces
She says she's smiling, as if she's pleased with herself
Or that somebody else! Who takes my shape better than I ever could
Or possibly it is me, this mirror has gotten pretty crowded ever since I decided to embrace the temporary
Candidly coughing like homesickness, spread to the lungs
Home is where the heart is, yuppies speak like that all the time
Hang up that phrase on decorative wood signs
But if its true, she needs to hold me
Body to Body
